The Transformation of the Sales Funnel
The Transformation of the Sales FunnelThe Transformation of the Sales FunnelThe Transformation of the Sales Funnel Belew, author of The Art of Social Selling(Amacom, 2014)The sales funnel is dead content is kingThis is the mantra now spreading throughout sales and marketingorganizations everywhere. However, while theres a great deal of truth to this contention, its only partially correct. The traditional sales funnel is by no means dead but it is outdated. The Traditional Sales FunnelIn the traditional model, the largest number of leads (albeit unqualified) enters at the wide top of the funnel. As they are pulled through the linear sales process from one stage to the next, more and more leads drop out along the way until only a small portion actually make it to the bottom, narrow part of the funnel to become loyal customers. The traditional salesfunnel generally has four stages-Starting at the top with the awareness stage (unqualified leads)-Then moving on to the evaluation stage (qu alified prospect)-As prospects make the decision to buy, they enter the purchase stage-They then become part of the loyalty stage (as customers)It is important to note that in the traditional funnel, it is the salesperson who controls or guides the lead through the sales process, educating and qualifying the prospect along the way until the purchasing decision is finally made. So what has really changed about this process? For our purposes, the names of the stages will remain the same. But the behavior surrounding those four stages is markedly different.A New Role for the SalespersonPerhaps the biggest change is that research indicates customers are now 57 percent of the way through the sales process before ever engaging with a salesperson according to a 2012 CEB whitepaper. In some cases, depending on the product schriftart and whether its B2B or B2C, prospects could be as much as 90 percent through the buying process before contacting a salesperson, according to 2012 findings from Forrester Ressearch. This is indicative of the level of consumer self-education that is occurring, or rather, it shows how (and how much) information is being consumed prior to a prospect making the first personal contact with a company representative.Remember, your prospective customer now has access to endless streams of branded and non-branded content, research, and opinions from websites, social networking sites, peer-to-peer virtual conversations, and even competitors. These highly-educated consumers now enter the buying process much closer to the bottom of that traditional sales funnel as qualified prospects ready to purchase, which brings us to the other significant change. The salespersonis no longer in charge of the buying process and no longer the gatekeeper of the information that would typically move the buyer from one stage of the funnel to the next. Instead, your customer defines the buying process. She may want to engage with you early on, or she may not want to talk wit h you at all before making her decision to buy.In fact, the only time you may engage with the prospect is during very late-stage activities, such as providing product demos and price quotes. At this point, you may be one of several companies being considered by the buyer, yet your ability to influence the purchasing decision has long passed without your ever having had contactThe Upended Sales FunnelFor these reasons, experts say the traditional sales funnel has been phased out. There is no longer a linear movement from unqualified lead (at the top of the funnel) to loyal customer (at the bottom of the funnel).Even so, there has not been a consensus as to what the new, online-driven sales funnel should look like. I have seen it illustrated as a sort of French horn, a series of circles, and as a neuron (as in a neuron or synapse from your brain) with a central hub and lots of little tentacles sprouting from it.Although a replacement for the traditional funnel is difficult to envisio n, experts seem to agree on the following changes to the buying process-Buyers no longer depend on salespeople to provide information and educate them on products or solutions.-Buyers have extended the number of places they get information and the way they consume it.-Buyers are entering the sales process much later and salespeople have less opportunity to influence the purchasing decision.-Buyers have increased the type of and the frequency of activities they complete before engaging with a salesperson.Buyers are influenced by content prior to becoming a recognized lead in the sales process. The last point is particularly important to understand.Content, if delivered soon enough, often enough, and through the right channels, still provides sales and marketing the opportunity to engage and influence prospective customers before they officially enter your sales cycle. The Art of Social Selling Finding and Engaging Customers on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Other Social Networks by S hannon Belew 2014 Shannon BelewAll rights reserved.Published by AMACOM Bookswww.amacombooks.orgDivision of American Management Association1601 Broadway, New York, NY 10019Author BioShannon Belew is the author of The Art of Social Selling Finding and Engaging Customers on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Other Social Networks and also Starting an Online geschftlicher umgang All-in-One For Dummies, now in its third edition. How to Survive (Even Thrive) in the Gig Economy
How to Survive (Even Thrive) in the Gig Economy How to Survive (Even Thrive) in the Gig Economy How to Thrive in the Gig Economy What do an Uber driver, a freelance writer and a carpenter have in common? The answer is that they are all part of the gig economy. What is the Gig Economy?Gig economy is the new economic trend where instead of hiring fulls of popular sites for freelance work include upwork.com or freelancer.com. Meanwhile, sites like taskrabbit.com are also devoted to gig economy jobs, but for more casual work, such as household projects.Professional networks are among the most common ways that companies find help for projects or even short-term contracts. Chances are good that a manager will first look to his or her network of contacts before going through a long recruitment process. Freelancers or consultants should rely on their networks to help connect with companies looking for workers.Competition for work in the gig economy is often fierce, especially since many gigs donât require candidates to be localized. With so many workers vying for the same gigs, there is a premium on being able to prove your worth. This means having a portfolio of past projects and list of satisfied clients to show off. Having a professional website with this content easily accessible is an efficient way to market your abilities.Meanwhile, a professional resume that is updated with current skills and work experiences (even if they are project-based) is just as valuable to gig workers as it is to those looking for full-time positions. Is the gig economy right for me?In reality, the gig economy is suited to all kinds of people, even those who already have full-time employment. Many people take on gigs not as a necessity, but as a way of earning supplemental income. At the other end of the spectrum are individuals who rely on temporary work to make a living. Sometimes these people donât have much choice because there is a shortage of permanent roles in their field. However, for others, participating in the gig economy is optional, in which case a number of factors s hould be considered.First, itâs good to ask yourself whether you have specialized skills that are in high enough demand. In other words, are you good enough at something (graphic design, writing, coding, etc.) that companies will be willing to pay you to do work for them? Then, you need to consider the differences that come with working gigs versus a full-time job. Gig workers need to devote a lot of their time searching for new clients or projects â" there is no promise of a steady stream of work. You are your own lifeline. With that comes financial variability.

6 Tips for Better Cold Calling
6 Tips for Better Cold Calling 6 Tips for Better Cold Calling Would you rather drop a large bowling ball on your foot than make a cold call? If so, youre in good company â" many, perhaps most, salespeople hate cold calling. Of course, cold calling is still the most effective way to reach out to new leads and get appointments, and as long as thats the case salespeople will continue to do plenty of cold calling. So if youre stuck with making cold calls why not do it as effectively as possible so you wont need to do as much? Here are some tips that can help you crank up your response rate for cold calls. Get It Over With Schedule a block of time as early as possible in the day to make your cold calls, then stick to it. If you put in your hour (or whatever) first thing, at least you wont have it hanging over your head the rest of the day. Plus, some salespeople find that its easier to get through to decision makers first thing in the morning. Have a Great Opener The first 30 seconds or so of a cold call are make it or break it time. Thats why the opener is the most important part of your cold call. If you refuse to use a cold calling script, at least prep a few strong openers and test them out. Youll see much better results on your cold calls. Know the Lead Before You Call When it comes to cold calling, Google is your friend. So are Facebook and (for B2B salespeople particularly) LinkedIn. These tools can give you amazingly useful information about the person you plan to call next. Finding out that a particular lead went to the same college you did or is friends with someone you happen to know can give you a huge advantage. Dont Make Assumptions Some leads will happily agree to an appointment even though they have no intention of buying from you. They may be looking for ammunition they can use to negotiate a better deal with their current vendor, or simply too polite to just blow you off over the phone. On the other hand, some extremely resistant people will turn out to be fantastic prospects and later, customers. Be aware that a prospects attitude during a cold call is not necessarily an indicator of how likely he is to buy. Sell the Appointment Cold calling is not intended to close sales. Its intended to get you a step further along the sales process towards eventually closing a sale. Focus on selling the prospect on setting an appointment with you, not on selling the product itself. Once youve got the prospect in front of you at an appointment, THEN you can start selling the product. Qualify, but Not Too Hard No lead list is perfect, so at least some of the people you call will not be qualified to buy from you. If you can weed those people out during the cold call, youll save yourself a lot of wasted appointment time. On the other hand, you dont want to ask a million qualifying questions during the cold call and antagonize your prospect. Stick with a few of the most important qualifying questions and hold off on the rest until later.

How to lead with questions, not perfect answers
How to lead with questions, not perfect answers How to lead with questions, not perfect answers âBureaucracies are built by and for people who busy themselves proving they are necessary, especially when they suspect they arenât.â - Ricardo SemlerLeaders are expected to be perfect (though they shouldnât be).Thatâs why, in many organizations, being right equals to having authority - certainty is rewarded, and questions are not allowed. The lack of a challenging mentality is an expensive mistake to make - companies end solving the wrong problem.Leadership models need to shift from owning knowledge to promoting a culture of curiosity.Managers are not meant to solve for everyoneâs problems - people have the ability and responsibility to find their own solutions. Encourage people to ask questions. Hold back your impulses; resist the temptation for (any) quick answer.Leading with questions is an invitation for everyone to think. The beauty lies in the questionHow people deal with questions says a lot about your organizational culture. As I observe helping teams become m ore innovative, the companies that resist change the most tend to ask very few questions.A more autonomous workplace is challenging power-drivenâ executives - they fear their expertise and authority can lose relevance. Thatâs why they donât encourage dissent - they protect their positions by owning the answers. However, providing wisdom is a more effective way of staying relevant - thatâs the power of questions.Wise leaders donât pretend to know it all - they are comfortable challenging their own assumptions. Wisdom, like leadership, is not defined by a title. We all want answers. However, wise people encourage us to find solutions on our own terms. They coach us to ask better questions - the beauty of problem-solving lies in the journey.Wise leaders challenge people to look beyond lazy solutions. Easy access to information promotes short-term curiosity. Most individuals seek easy answers, not true knowledge - 95% of people donât check past Googleâs page one resul ts.Beautiful questions move us from our comfort zone to the discovery zone.A beautiful question is an ambitious yet actionable question that shifts the way we perceive or think about something, according to Warren Berger. The author of A Beautiful Question, coined that term to refer to a catalyst that can uncover change and possibilities.Berger focuses on questions that can be acted upon. Thatâs where the beauty lies - itâs not about creating a philosophical debate, but to provoke deep thinking to uncover practical solutions.Leaders must help their teams rediscover the beauty within questions - quick short-term fixes are anything but beautiful. How you can lead with questionsâQuestions are the frames into which the answers fall.â - Tina Seelig1. Challenge existing assumptionsPerfectionism is the enemy of change; itâs impossible to improve something when we believe thereâs nothing wrong. Blind spots get us into trouble - what individuals or teams donât know they don ât know causes the majority of corporate failures.âIf I leave the company, what would you like the new CEO to change.âMany organizations donât encourage people to ask questions - challenging your boss, or the status quo is seen as disrespectful. However, not acting upon the issues can cause more harm than putting someoneâs prestige at risk.Start by challenging your own assumptions. Embracing vulnerability rather than certainty is anything but weakness - itâs a clear proof of your commitment to continuous improvement.2. Reframe the real problemWe all jump way too fast into finding solutions. However, sometimes our creative juices can harm us - the rush to show how smart we are moves us into answering the wrong question. Why should you be stuck without a bed if Iâve got an extra air mattress?Airbnbâs $10 billion valuation all started with a Beautiful Question, as Berger explains in his book. Beautiful questions are not just about you; they help realize other peopleâ s problems.Brainstorming questions, not ideas, forces us to focus on better understanding the problem, rather than jumping into the solutions. Why does the problem exist? What does it say about our company? Is there a more significant problem behind it that we are missing?Brainstorming questions helps people dig deeper into a problem - solving the right challenge starts by challenging the problem itself.3. Create a culture of curiosityCuriosity is the mother of innovation. To unleash your teamâs creativity doesnât require complicated questions. Sometimes, simpler questions can find solutions behind the status quo - the devil is in the details.âWhy do we want kids to sit still in class?âCuriosity is about challenging our daily reality - what others accept as ânormal,â you turn it into a question. A report from the Institute of Medicine concluded that active children show greater attention, have faster cognitive processing speed and perform better.Turn asking questions into ongoing practice. A culture of curiosity also leverages the power of quiet people - introverts feel more comfortable asking questions that sharing their ideas out loud.4. Coach people to ask better questionsOur brain likes to ask lazy questions - we substitute questions with easier ones to save energy and time. As Nobel laureate and psychologist Daniel Kahneman explains: âWhen faced with a difficult question, we often answer an easier one instead, usually without noticing the substitution.ââHow can we play better?â versus âWhatâs driving our success?Donât focus on the positive. People are less likely to lie when questioners make pessimistic assumptions versus optimistic ones, as different studies show.Avoid closed questions; they force us to select between existing options. Suboptimal questions make us settle for lazy answers - sometimes the best solution is to unanswer the question, as I wrote here.Encourage your team to challenge the questions - donât set tle for lazy problems.5. Use questions to encourage transparencyEvery individual in your organization is a sensor. The increasing complexity and speed of businesses require paying attention to every signal - when a problem makes it to the top, it might be too late to fix it.âWhat is everyone thinking but no one is saying?A culture that encourages people to ask questions increases communication, collaboration, and transparency. It facilitates identifying and addressing tensions before they escalate and create more harm.Transparency removes the drama behind questions - rather than being defensive; people enjoy the challenge. It creates an open-dialogue culture - people provide feedback via âwhat if?â rather than âyou should ⦠â- - - For some people, questioning is a natural skill; for most, it needs to be nurtured.Creating a culture of curiosity takes time. Most people are wired to impress others with their smarts rather than to challenge reality - they need to becom e comfortable with navigating uncertainty. The power of questions lies in unlocking value in organizations. It turns blindspots into bright spots, it fuels innovation and continuous improvement, it creates a culture of transparency and collaboration, it focuses our effort on solving the right problem and builds trust.Leading with questions is a beautiful and effective habit.Upgrade your teamDownload my ebook âStretch Your Team - how to thrive in a changing worldâ: get your free copy.Receive my weekly âInsights for Changemakersâ Sign Up Now.This article first appeared on Medium.

Learn How to Get Dog Groomer Certification
Learn How to Get Dog Groomer Certification Learn How to Get Dog Groomer Certification At this time, certification is not required to become a dog groomer. However, obtaining education and a certificate via training from an accredited pet grooming institution will not only give you greater knowledge and, hence credibility, but this will also afford you the skills and confidence to better serve your furry clients. In order to get a handle on what it takes to become a certified pet groomer, Linda Easton, an International Certified Master Groomer, shares her wisdom about how to go about getting the best training possible. Linda is also head of Salem, Oregon-based International Professional Groomers, Inc., one of three U.S. institutions that provide groomer certification. Locating Dog Groomer Schools that Offer Certification In order to obtain proper certification, one must receive training from a school with instructors who are certified master dog groomers. There three major sources for certification in the U.S., Linda said. One is my organization (International Professional Groomers, Inc.), the National Dog Groomers Association of America and the International Society of Canine Cosmetologists. They also have the ultimate certification for a master groomer. This means that they have completed the relevant education and have passed a series of comprehensive practical and written tests. All of these organizations base their criteria on American Kennel Club breed standards, Linda said. They have a standard for each different breed. You also get to understand certain things to do to make the dogs look better, to give them a better profile. The latter is the best thing, as it makes the dogs look a little better and happier if they are groomed well. Proper schooling that leads to certification requires a considerable time commitment. Our minimum schooling is 480 hours, which is 16 weeks, Linda added. Some programs are shorter. But thatâs a fairly average amount of hours around the country. Furthermore, some schools offer full-time (five days a week) training programs, while others offer programs that allow students to attend classes on a part-time basis. You could train on a part-time basis while youre still working, and want to pursue grooming as a second career, Linda said. What to Look for in a Dog Groomer School When looking for a groomer school, be sure to find one with instructors that have received certification from one of the above-mentioned schools. Groomer schools may have one to several instructors that are masters. We offer memberships to schools; 15 schools are now members, Linda said. They are listed on our website. Up until now, everybody has been flying blind trying to find schools. We (have expanded this) to make an umbrella for schools. There will be minimum standards for how many hours they teach, if they have a curriculum- which a lot of schools do not- and that they will guarantee what you will be learning. For example, we will guarantee that you will be grooming at least five dogs a day in a shop. Linda added that, if you feel that your skills still need fine-tuning following formal training, you can stay on and continue to train at good schools for no extra money because they want to see you succeed. Groomer Apprenticeships Linda said apprenticing with a reputable established dog groomer is good supplemental training because it will give you hands-on experience in a real-world scenario. Apprenticeship is the way most of us old time groomers learned the trade, she said. What is most effective is to go through school and then go out and apprentice, even for just a few days a week until you start a business. This is also a good way to get a closer look at the actual nuts and bolts of running a grooming business such as effective customer service, marketing, types of products that groomers use to increase their bottom line, and other important business-operating skills. Red Flags to Look For in Dog Grooming Schools While a number of excellent dog groomer schools exist out there, there are also some turkeys. In order to avoid investing your valuable time and money into a potentially bad school, Linda says that you should thoroughly investigate any school or schools you may want to attend. They should tour the school and see if the dogs are being handled gently, she said. They should ask themselves if they would take their dog into the school? If the instructor does not have any kind of certification or claims that you dont need certification, thats another red flag. Otherwise, some dog groomer schools allow students to come in and just groom dogs, unsupervised. This is the kind of school to avoid. You should check to see if the students are just grooming dogs, or if someone is giving them tips while they groom. Is it clean? Does it smell bad? Is it really noisy? Are the dogs confined safely? Are the dogs and groomers safe? Look for the same things you would look for in a grooming shop. Linda also recommends finding a school that has a standalone bather program or go to a shop and offer to be a bather for free for a few days to see if this is really what you want to do. This is a good indicator of what the work really is like,â she said. That way, you can determine if you like it before investing a whole lot of money and deciding you dont want to do this.

Production Credits in Security Brokerage Firms
Production Credits in Security Brokerage Firms Production Credits in Security Brokerage Firms While it is common shorthand to say that financial advisors are paid based on commissions, this is not strictly the case. Rather, their cash compensation equals their accumulated production credits times a payout ratio. production credits may be equal to, less than, or even more than the actual revenue earned by the firm on a given transaction executed by the financial advisor on behalf of a client. With stock trades executed on the New York Stock Exchange, production credits typically equal the amount of commission paid by the client. For this reason, and because such NYSE-listed equity trading traditionally formed the bulk of the revenue stream generated by most financial advisors, it became commonplace to conflate production credits with commissions in common usage. Types of Production Credits Production credits normally equal, or at least closely approximate, the sales charges embedded in a given securities transaction. These include, for example: Commissions paid by the client on a transaction where the brokerage firm acts as an agent, either executing the trade on a securities exchange or with another firm that makes a market in that security. In the case of clients who pay by assets, rather than by commissions on individual transactions, production credits normally will equal those asset-based fees. The markup or markdown paid by the client on a transaction where the brokerage firm acts as a principal, fulfilling the order from an inventory of securities that it holds and manages. Markups on client purchases and markdowns on client sales typically are computed in the same fashion as commissions on agency transactions. Selling concessions in new issues of securities. The price of a new issue of equity or debt typically includes a selling concession and an underwriting fee that are layered on top of the net amount that the issuer will receive. The selling concession compensates salespersons (such as financial advisors) for finding investors willing to buy into the issue. The underwriting fee compensates the investment bankers and securities underwriters who structured the deal, and who may be assuming some degree of risk if it does not sell out at the stated price. Sales charges embedded in the pricing of mutual funds. Some mutual funds are sold with explicit sales charges that the client can readily see, and some are not. In the realm of mutual funds, sales charges traditionally have been called sales loads. Since the 1980s, mutual fund companies increasingly have been turning to so-called back end loads that are charged to the client at the time of sale, rather than at the time of purchase. There also are so-called level load funds in which the sales charge is embedded in the fundâs annual operating expenses. These schemes were devised to counter the growing popularity of no-load funds that are sold directly to the investor by the mutual fund company, rather than through securities brokerage firms and salespersons such as financial advisors. By replacing front end loads with delayed loads, mutual funds with sales charges have found a way to overcome investor resistance. Other Production Credit Awards: Production credits also may be awarded for non-transactional work done by a financial advisor, such as for persuading a client to have a formal financial plan prepared by the firm.Flavor of the Month: Firms regularly have special marketing drives that vary from month to month, for which extra production credits, above and beyond the usual, are awarded for participation. Such campaigns often are called âflavor of the monthâ specials, with some touch of disdain, since financial advisors rarely see any long term value in participation, but will do so to maximize their compensation. In the case of firms that also act as market makers, they might add bonus production credits in order to stimulate sales of certain securities with which they have become saddled with excess inventory. Also Known As: Commissions Alternate Spellings: PCs Examples: The financial advisor earned 250 Production Credits on this trade.

11 things unsuccessful people do over the weekend
11 things unsuccessful people do over the weekend 11 things unsuccessful people do over the weekend Everybodyâs working for the weekend, but how you spend your two days off may say something about how successful you are. What you get up to doesnât really matter, per se. If you prefer lounging around the house to spontaneous adventures, thatâs great! You probably need that time to wind down. But when it comes to weekends, the main thing that separates successful people from unsuccessful people is mindfulness. Are you planning ahead and truly thinking about how to spend your free time?Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Here are 11 things that unsuccessful people tend to do over the weekend - and why you should avoid them: They forget to schedule Not every minute of every hour of your weekend needs to be planned out, but itâs good to have a general idea of what youâd like to do or get done - even if youâre just scheduling downtime. Thatâll allow you to protect your time, and maybe even schedule in some fun events. They ignore loved ones It can be hard to make time for the ones you care about during the hectic week. Make up for that over the weekend. They let technology take over Put away your phone. Shut off your work email - and make it clear to your coworkers that you wonât be responding. Donât get addicted to technology. They forget to unwind Whether youâre unwinding alone or going out with friends, make sure to do something that makes you happy during your time off. They sleep the entire time Maybe you drank too much on Friday and are recovering. Maybe youâre just super tired. Either way, this could really mess up your sleep cycle, and you probably need to fix that. They rack up expenses You pinch pennies all week, and then blow it all over the weekend. Heck, you should treat yourself every once in a while. That being said, if youâre overspending on the weekends on frivolities that you donât need, then itâs time to consider some cheap but fun options, like staycations or free local events. They avoid taking time to reflect During your busy week, it can be difficult to snag some time to just think about your life and goals. Itâs important to check in with yourself every once in a while. They arenât present On Fridays, itâs a great idea to set out an agenda for the next Monday. Being prepared is great; being a workaholic is not. Kick back and relax a bit on Saturday and Sunday! They laze around and regret it Chilling out over the weekend is definitely a great way to unwind. But if your slothfulness is making you bored or bummed out - or causing you to neglect important errands and chores - then you may want to rethink how you spend your Saturdays and Sundays. Theyâre stressed out At the other end of the spectrum are people who pack too much into their weekend schedule. In order to be productive (and therefore successful) at work, itâs important to use the weekend to recharge your batteries. If your weekends include zero downtime, then youâll never feel rested or refreshed, which can be detrimental to your success. They get too comfortable with the time off Sunday nights are the perfect time to plan for the week ahead. You can make a to-do list, update or review your calendar, or just think about what it is youâd like to accomplish in the coming days. This article originally appeared on Business Insider.
